Man weiss sehr wenig darüber, was während des 2. Weltkrieges auf den Kanalinseln vorging, hier bekommt man eine Antwort. Ich habe viel gelacht, ich habe aber auch geweint. Und ich war traurig als es aus war. Kaufempfehlung.
Strange title - great book
Datum:27.06.2010 - Rating: 4/5I thoroughly enjoyed this epistolary novel. It is the legacy of two women with a gift for storytelling. Using their protagonist, columnist and writer Juliet Ashton, they are giving the German occupation of Guernsey and WWII in general a unique perspective. I cherish this book for its endearing characters, for its lack of black & white / good vs. evil depiction and because it helps the generations who were so fortunate to be born after that terrible, historical event (me included) to understand the terror of war. Do not expect a well-researched historian's report! This book is about special people and their individual as well as collective destinies. It is a great book to give to adolescents and make them understand - not only about war but what literature can do for you in times of hardship. In this context I especially liked the references to the classics - they might induce our youth to go on reading ...
Wonderful narration of a lovely, engaging book.
Datum:27.05.2010 - Rating: 5/5This is an excellent audio production. I have listened to it twice and will surely go back to it again. The book is well written and heart-warming. All in all, a super choice.
Neither good nor bad
Datum:07.05.2010 - Rating: 3/5I love epistolary novels because they are so easy to read in fits and starts. So I was looking forward to this one. I didn't know anything about the author(s) but as soon as I started reading it, it was glaringly obvious that they weren't British because some of the language used was so American. Another weakness was that the letters, so obviously contrived, were basically very similar in tone although supposedly from widely different characters - the letters by the "men" were totally unconvincing. The love story element held no surprises so was rather tedious. However, the subject - the German Occupation of the Islands - was interesting and I liked the way the author(s) brought this harrowing experience onto a personal level. In summary, not bad but Helene Hanff's "84 Charing Cross Road" is, in my opinion, much better.
Enchanting, warmhearted, funny and bittersweat
Datum:04.05.2010 - Rating: 5/5This book is such a charming page-turner, full of wisdom, wit and love for all the honest people of the world.
And it is a massive plea to prevent any war with its cruelties.
I promise that you will be in love with the books characters after reading. And you will never forget those adorabe human beings: Juliet, the young, almost forlorn writer, Dawsey, the upright, shy, but precious farmer, bewitching Isola, motherless, artistic Eli, sweat fatherless Kit and courageous Elizabeth.
This epistolary novel is a real gem! Dont miss it!
